More Photos from Lately

As promised, I'm back with more recent snapshots of life with two kids. A lot of the time, I look like a hot mess, at least one item of clothing I'm wearing has spit up or milk or food from my toddler's last meal on it. I don't remember what feeling rested looks like, and I am fairly certain I haven't gotten a haircut since May of last year. But I really just care about my sweet boys.

How amazing is this moment?

And this one?

Truly, having two children has made me happier than I thought possible.

Fun with matching socks!

We've gotten to enjoy some chilly weather this month, so Terry made a fire for us. Scout planted himself right in front of it and even let Marshall pet him.

And then we took our third trip up north since Christmas, and Marshall got some fun new toys.

(Yep, that's a toy stand mixer. It's living at PopPop and JanJan's house.)

This kid.

We're quite the parade when we go for walks.

The point of this trip up north was to celebrate my sister-in-law and mama-to-be Ashley at her shower! I had the honor of helping to plan the shower and had a blast seeing it all come together with the co-hosts. I loved seeing my gorgeous sister glowing! She and my brother are going to be incredible parents. And I can't wait to meet my niece AND nephew!

Marshall and Declan were incredible on the rides to and from my parents' house. We think the sweet spot for driving is leaving between 11 and 12, getting Marshall to nap around 1. He is so great about it!

Here's more of that weather I mentioned. A few weeks ago it POURED for several days, and one day we got a solid storm. Still, we decided to head into Westwood to run an errand--a crazy idea with a toddler and baby! But it was SO fun! We splashed around, giggled about the crazy rain, and jumped over big puddles. I doubt we'll see rain like that in LA again for a long time!

Checking out books at the library.

Marshall asked to watch "the Declan movie" after we put Dec to bed.

And that brings us to today! After everyone was home from work and daycare, we took a walk around the neighborhood. Marshall and Daddy had so much fun playing jump-off-the-wall!

Twins :-)

This little guy turns FIVE months (how?!) on Sunday. I'll be back then with an update on his sweet little life so far!

We're looking forward to a few weeks of being close to home, letting things calm down, and enjoying our amazing boys. I just want to snuggle them and listen to their giggles!

Things Making Me Happy This Week

I took two full rest days yesterday and today. Very little walking, no yoga, just some stretching/foam rolling and lots of relaxing. I needed it!

One of my friends suggested a "picture of the day" text game where we all text each other a favorite/funny/sweet/frustrating picture from the day. We've been going strong for a while now and have so many fun exchanges based on these photos. I love seeing little glimpses into their lives, too!

Foam rolling! I've been all about it these last few days in particular, because my hips are insanely tight and sore. Marshall jumped in on the action yesterday.

This kid loves to eat. And I love that. But sometimes we have to tell him dinner is over, and he gets really angry. Yesterday it was because we wouldn't give him raisins. Life is hard.

I threw together some meager fall decorations. Scout is a huge fan.

This article about Ina Garten makes me love her even more, especially the fact that she does all her own social media!

These pieces of wedding advice from A Cup of Jo. Some wise words! Mine would be: Do it the way you want. Trying to please everyone else is a great way to go insane. Oh, and be sure to plan for a midnight snack in the hotel room!

Fun, Clumsy Day and Kitchen Staples

Hello and happy Wednesday! Posts have become a bit sporadic around here, and I'm not really sure why. I guess we're soaking up our summer days as the sun sets a little earlier and we can sort of see fall approaching. It actually cooled down quite a bit yesterday, and today has felt downright pleasant. But let's not get ahead of ourselves; I'm sure we have more than enough hot days coming our way.

Anyway, the week has really chugged along, and I love weeks like that! Nothing big to report, just more plans than usual, which feels nice after so many long, hot, and sometimes boring summer days. Today we headed to Manhattan Beach to meet up with our My Gym friends and then went to My Gym itself. I'm beginning to LOVE Wednesday mornings! We walked along the pier and then grabbed a bagel before heading to class, the boys got to run and splash in puddles (Marshall actually decided to sit IN a puddle, of course), and my friend and I got to chat.

Future best friends?

Stacking fun!

Annnnnd someone's tired.

By the time we finished My Gym and made it home, I was exhausted, so I pepped myself up with some iced tea before continuing on with the day.

Although my day has been riddled with silly clumsy mistakes. I opened my water bottle in the car and spilled everywhere (probably 8-10 ounces). And then later...

And at dinner...

Amazing, as always.

Once Terry came home, he took Marshall to the library and captured the sweetest moment:

Marshall chose a book, sat down in a chair at a table, "read" the book, and put the book back on the shelf, all by himself! Who is this tiny human?

Our meal plan this week has been a lovely one, especially the fried rice and pulled pork. Tonight we used up the last of the pulled pork for some simple sandwiches (with caramelized onions and pepper jack cheese), along with a mix-n-match of greens to clear out the fridge of all these random bags of lettuce.

Fried rice earlier this week

Speaking of which, I noticed today that we rarely have extra food (without plans to use it soon) around (to my dismay, when Marshall was sound asleep and I had virtually no lunch options--I wound up eating yogurt, peanut butter, and banana). I read blogs all the time where the writer might mention something like, "We didn't have any dinner plans, so I scrounged around and made a big salad with tons of vegetables and leftover cooked chicken." How do you just happen to have a bunch of random vegetables--not to mention chicken--hanging out in the fridge with no plan for them? Or, "I got hungry in the afternoon, so I pulled out some forgotten snacks from the pantry." Forgotten snacks? Is this a thing? Do people actually buy food and then forget that they bought it? Because I'm over here trying to resist eating all the food on the first day I bought it.

Seriously, though, I do actually believe it saves us a lot of money (and headache) to meal plan and then only shop for what we need for the next few days or week or so. Living in small apartments for so long has not really allowed me to buy a ton of extras, because I have no space to store it! But it also helps ensure that we're only buying (for the most part) what we know we'll eat, and then we don't have to throw it away. It's great a lot of the time, but then those days come along where I wish I had a box of crackers to accompany some cheese for an afternoon snack.

So anyway our usual routine is to keep our "staples" stocked; we always have:
- milk
- yogurt
- peanut butter (crunchy for me, creamy for Marshall, Terry likes both) or, if I'm feeling crazy, almond butter
- maple syrup (we like the Kirkland Organic Maple Syrup)
- eggs
- nuts, although we haven't really been eating a ton of nuts lately--I got SO sick of them when I was pregnant!
- raisins
- oats
- some sort of bread (we like making our own now!) or tortillas or pita bread
- cheese--usually pepper jack and something else, like sharp cheddar
- fruit
- vegetables, but these vary from week to week based on meal plans
- in the freezer: frozen berries, frozen chopped spinach, and frozen peas, plus chicken stock
- around the kitchen: whole wheat flour, vanilla, baking powder and soda, spices and dried herbs, olive oil, balsamic vinegar, red wine vinegar, and a few condiments, like mustard
- some sort of dessert, which varies every few days

And then weekly or whenever I need to I grab what's needed for that week's meal plan, plus whatever staples need replenishing. It's sort of bare bones, but right now it works for us and prevents us from having too much food going to waste. I'd say our biggest waste is when we have really small portions of leftovers (we usually package them up but then ignore them because they aren't really a full meal), or when we have, say, half a lemon leftover from some recipe. Most of the time I have good intentions--"Oh, I'll just use that tomorrow to make lemon water or something!"--but it rarely gets used. I do much better when I have set plans for how I'll use ALL the food, so if a recipe only calls for half an onion I like to make sure I'll use the other half in the following day's recipe.

How do you avoid food waste? Any suggestions?

Do you prefer to keep your kitchen fully stocked with lots of options, or more bare bones and shop as needed?

And Then it Was Friday

And what a beautiful day it is! We let the baby wake us up early today (I say "let" because he usually wakes us up between 5 and 6 now and we almost always try to pretend he'll go back to sleep, which never happens, but today we agreed to get up and out when he woke up), around 6 am. I fed him, we ate a quick snack and made tea to go, and then headed out to the park. We walked two miles, chatted, watched the people and squirrels and birds and dogs, and headed back home. It was the perfect way to start the weekend--fresh air, exercise, time together as a family.

I told Terry we need to make an effort to get ourselves out like that more often, because it just hasn't been happening in the evenings. We're all exhausted at the end of the day (more like by 3 pm for me), and since Marshall is ready to start the day super early, maybe we should just roll with it until he's past this phase (I hope?) of waking with the sun. Terry's work has been absolutely insane, too (how many times have I said that in the last several months?), so he works longer hours and often has to drive to San Diego and therefore almost never gets a chance to exercise. When he signed up for a football team with his coworkers, I was all excited about it because it would give him at least one day a week of exercise. Then he hurt his ankle. TPoor guy.

So anyway, we agreed to try to get up and out more often for family walks at the very least, and to complete more quick at-home workouts. Last night I did an "every-minute-on-the-minute" workout--5 push ups plus a 10-second plank every minute for 20 minutes. 100 push ups total, not too strenuous or sweaty, and perfect for a post-dinner workout, since the only chance I found was after Marshall was asleep. Little workouts like that do their job of keeping me strong without requiring a gym or tons of space or lots of time--none of which I have at the moment.

Meanwhile, we've been doing well with lots of home-cooked meals lately:

Frittata loaded with spinach, mushrooms, chicken sausage, cheese, onion, and green bell pepper, plus roasted potatoes

Pumpkin muffins (I made a double batch last week and froze half, so they lasted a while)--made with maple syrup instead of honey

Marshall has been especially helpful on grocery trips lately.

Actually, funny story: The other day we went to HomeGoods, and Marshall likes to reach his hands out toward the merchandise, but of course I make sure to keep the cart in open areas so he can't actually touch stuff (except clothes and rugs, because those are just fun!). Well some well-meaning man walks by and says, "You need to keep him farther away from stuff! He'll grab things off shelves!" AS HIS WIFE WALKS INTO A DISPLAY AND KNOCKS DOWN AN EASTER BUNNY STATUE. Justice.

I just smiled and thanked him for his advice (as I thought, "Um, maybe you need to keep your wife farther away from stuff...").

Tomorrow our little family is taking a short trip down to San Diego. We're just spending one night, but I've noticed more and more that restaurants with a baby are more successful and calm if I bring food for Marshall instead of waiting for our food to arrive and then scrambling to give him bite-sized pieces of our meals. So I am packing the following:

  • frozen peas (they'll thaw quickly, but I've learned there's no need to boil them ahead--Marshall gobbles them up either way!)
  • a pumpkin muffin
  • sliced olives (straight out of the can, but rinsed off)
  • these quesadillas below:

I tried Ezekiel quesadillas this time around; they are made with all sorts of natural ingredients that result in a complete protein (and no honey, which is hard to find). So I layered cheese and cooked spinach and then cut them into rectangles, and now Marshall is able to bite off pieces of foods like this instead of needing them cut into tiny pieces for him. I'll grab two of these for a meal along with some other fruits or vegetables, and he's a happy camper!

Other than that, we'll grab fruits and vegetables there and of course share from our plates. And now Marshall loves to drink out of a straw, so we give him sips of water at the table to make his day.

So our weekend will be a delightful little trip to San Diego, along with celebrating Easter on our way back. I hope your weekend is filled with relaxing, friends, family, and fun! Happy Easter!

Things I'm Loving Friday

I know a lot of boggers post this type of list every week, but I would just end up posting twelve pictures of Marshall and calling it a day. Hopefully today's list involves some variety.

Here's my most recent Instagram photo, taken today (Thursday). Scout has actually interacted a lot more with Marshall since the latter started crawling. Scout will get close to Marshall, but he is always prepared to run away when necessary. That's why we named him Scout. Because Boy Scouts are always prepared.

This commercial, which I have seen approximately 15 times lately because it's always on during our HuluPlus shows. I'm not sure why I find it so hilarious, but I do.

These cookies. Oh man, you guys. I can't even eat more than two at a time--that's how rich they are. But they are SO good.

Parks and Rec is back! They're really pushing the story line along (well, it is supposed to be three years after the last one), but I love having the ol' gang back!

This trick for people who worry too much. I'm definitely going to try it next time I get all up in my head, which will likely be sometime in the next week.

This article, "Mommy, Somebody Needs You," which of course made me cry. I also thought of it last night from 10:30 to midnight, when Marshall needed to be comforted and eventually rocked to sleep. I cried because he was so heavy and I thought about the fact that I won't always be able to hold him.

Terry and I are still working on running 20 miles in January. We're up to 6.5 miles, and we have 13.5 to go.

I went walking with my group of mom friends again today, which was so fun. We chatted about easy dinner ideas and baby stuff and funny things our babies do, and it was pure wonderful to hang out with other adults (and see their cute babies!) for an hour. I felt so refreshed!

And now it's time to enjoy a long weekend with my boys! We're planning a little trip to the aquarium together. Hooray!

Have a wonderful weekend! What's something that made you happy this week?

Highs and Lows and Fun Facts

Happy Wednesday! I didn't document my food today, so let's take things in another direction. First up: Highs and lows of the week so far.

HIGH: Watching Marshall crawl around like a madman! He is on the move and I can't believe how far he can move all of a sudden. Needless to say, I'm constantly watching where he is off to, which is usually the most dangerous part of the room. Of course.

LOW: Yesterday's projectile vomiting. It's never happened before, and I was completely unprepared for it. All over his high chair tray, all over his lap, all over the floor. I'll spare the rest of the details (color, texture, smell), but you have no idea how desperately I wished Terry was home at that moment.

HIGH: Getting an e-mail from a reader!!! Hi Jen! This never happens, so I'm super excited, and now I have a new friend (like it or not, Jen, we're officially friends now).

LOW: Lots and lots of fussiness from our little dude. Teething? Probably. We can see two teeth up in his gums, but who knows when they'll poke through? It could be a million other things. We'll get through it.

We had a fun lunch date, though!

HIGH: I got to go to UCLA today! I was only there for an hour meeting with my former boss about helping with a reunion, but it was so nice to spend even a little bit of time in my favorite place!

HIGH: The food around here has been out of control lately--in a good way. Ina Garten makes our house a happy home because everything she puts in a cookbook is truly magic. Like this Mexican chicken soup:

And these chocolate peanut butter globs (terrible name, absolutely ridiculous cookie):

And now for some fun, random facts about me as a cook/baker:

1) I am terribly messy when I cook or bake (I get this trait from my mom, who is even worse). Luckily I love cleaning my kitchen almost as much as I love cooking in it.

2) I make a lot of cooking decisions based on how many dishes I'll have to clean. Tons of recipes tell me to mix dry ingredients in one bowl and wet ingredients in another, and I almost always ignore those instructions. I just want to avoid doing dishes.

3) When I cook, but more so when I bake, I always always always "taste test"--that's what I call it when I eat half the batter every time I bake cookies.

4) Terry says he loves watching me bake because I exude confidence in the kitchen. I don't especially feel like a confident person under normal circumstances, so I love this compliment. He says I'm in my element when I bake. I love that.

5) Recently we took our microwave out of our kitchen. We rarely used it anyway, and I thought the cubby where we kept it would be better as a bookshelf for all our cookbooks. Now I use my cookbooks far more often because they're right in the room with me when I cook.

6) I never measure vanilla. Because can you ever really have too much vanilla?

I feel like I can say the same about cinnamon rolls. You can never have too many.

7) I absolutely hate these kitchen tasks: cooking/crumbling sausage, mincing garlic, washing herbs or lettuce, and washing the cheese grater.

8) I don't cry when chopping onions, unless I'm wearing my glasses. Weird, right?

I am also terrified of slicing spaghetti squash.

9) I think I'm worst at making sauces. They always end up too thick or too thin or too lumpy or too something.

10) Inspiration for making whipped cream always strikes after Marshall goes to sleep, so I can't use my stand mixer. Therefore we have to do it by hand. I say "we" because I start it, but Terry inevitably finishes it because my arm gets too tired.

You turn: Fun fact about you in the kitchen? High and low for the day?

Successes and Failures Part II

Why is it even a possibility in my life to write this type of post again? Why am I such a mess? Should we not ask these questions?

Oh, well. Here are some successes and failures lately.

Success. Starting positively...Jenn and I met for a workout today! AND--bonus--Terry came but took Marshall for a stroll so Jenn and I could work out just the two of us like old times. It was SO fun! I really haven't done much of anything without Marshall--aside from a trip to the store here and there, plus one massage--since May, so it was such a treat to get to spend some time with my pal. Here's what we did:

Warm up: Jog 1 minute, walk 2 minutes--3 rounds (9 minutes)
10 minute park workout: 30 seconds of work, then 30 seconds calf raises before moving on to the next exercise

  • Squat to Hip Abduction (right side)
  • 180 Squat Jumps
  • Squat to Hip Abduction (left side)
  • Tuck Jumps
  • Stationary Lunge Pulses (right side)
  • Plie Squats
  • Stationary Lunge Pulses (left side)
  • Star Jumps
  • One-Leg Glute Raises* (right side)
  • One-Leg Glute Raises* (left side)
*Since the grass was wet, we did one-leg deadlifts instead.

Then, to wrap up: Jog 1 minute, Walk 1 minute for a total of 10 minutes

It was perfect; I definitely think we'll be feeling it tomorrow, but we were able to keep up a conversation throughout the workout. Bonus: No equipment required!

Failure: Virtually no pictures for WIAW, with one exception (below). I have no excuses. But you should look at other people's food pictures, because that's always fun.

Success: I have made it a goal in my life to have friends who think of me when they see funny things and then send me those funny things. Here's what Jenn sent me tonight.

Failure: Today I thought up what I hoped would be an incredible lunch: whole wheat toast with melted brie and crushed blackberries (I toasted the bread, then topped it with the cheese and berries and put everything in the oven for 15 minutes to get the berries to burst). And really, it was quite tasty--except I managed to flip one of my pieces onto the counter (upside down, obviously). Bye, berries. I didn't even take a photo of my disaster because I was so upset.

Pre-fail.

Success: Marshall is starting to learn how to get into a crawling position! I get to take credit for his successes, right?

(I haven't gotten a photo of the crawling position yet, but you know what it looks like.)

Failure: I keep wearing the wrong workout clothes. Usually I am pretty chilly in our apartment, and I figure (despite experience continuing to prove me wrong) that in December it should be nice and crisp outside, so I continue to try to wear pants and long sleeves to work out. And then I get outside and it's 75 degrees and I'm dying a slow, hot death. This evening I got smart and wore shorts to work out with Jenn, and of course it got dark and cold before we even started.

Success: I finally went to a Stroller Strides class! (Fun fact: I last wrote about my inability to attend during my last successes and failures post. I love when life comes full circle like that.) I thought the workout part was pretty light, very manageable for new moms, anyone getting back in shape, even pregnant ladies (two moms who attended are pregnant with their second kids!). The tough part is that kids are so unpredictable, so at any given moment at least one kid was upset about being in the stroller. Still, I got to see a few moms I've seen before, we all got outside, I tried something new, and Marshall got to interact with some of the other babies at the end of class.

Failure: Yesterday I went to the store for eggs and milk (and only those two items), and then I got distracted by candy canes and chocolate chips (what?). Guess what I didn't buy? So then today we had to make an emergency stop on our way home from the park to grab milk because we couldn't go another day without hot chocolate.

Success: Dinner was a winner! Roasted spaghetti squash with homemade sauce (onion, carrot, celery, garlic, canned tomatoes, wine, tomato paste, some dried herbs, lots of simmering...), plus some greens thrown in for good measure. Delicious.

You decide: Success or failure? My family and I have been texting back and forth the last few days on a variety of topics. Tonight included the "storm of the century" that's about to hit Northern California (they have closed most schools for tomorrow--what?!). My dad and brother are both Eagle Scouts, so I got these texts:

Should I feel proud that he's so ready? (My brother later texted a similar photo...despite his original sarcastic response.) Should I feel worried that Marshall will be inheriting at least some of these nerdy genes? Should I feel fear for the residents of Northern California? Or should I just call it a night and have another glass of wine?

I choose the wine. Goodnight, friends.

Any successes or failures lately? Come on...make me feel better.
