Long Weekend and Mr. Smee

On Thursday evening we opted to avoid cooking to prevent heating up the apartment even more, so we assembled BLTs for dinner.

Friday night Terry attended his high school's football game, so Marshall and I were on our own. I almost never give Marshall his bath because Terry is the Bath Master, so it was extra special and super fun!

Saturday we attended a memorial service, which was really lovely. It included military honors, which I've never had the chance to see, and I thought the ceremony was so touching. We were out most of the day and made it home for dinner and bed for the little guy.

Today we "slept in" by Marshall's standards (6 am!), so we ate pancakes and headed out for a long walk to the farmers' market with our neighbors. But not before making fun of Scout for choosing the most ridiculous lounge spot ever.

I accidentally dressed Marshall like Mr. Smee.

How cute are these photos Terry took?

We scored the three bags below for only $5! And the three types of hummus are SO good.

Then we cooled down with smoothies--frozen spinach, frozen berries, yogurt, peanut butter, milk.

Terry and I took advantage of Marshall's nap with some chores and errands, plus Day 2 (yeah, that took a week to get to the second video) of the 30-Day Challenge for Yoga with Adriene. It wasn't too crazy, but I tweaked something in my lower back and have been hobbling around a bit all day.

When Marshall woke up, we took him to the splash park!

He was pretty into it! And thankfully it wasn't too crowded, so we didn't have to worry about big kids trampling him.

Back at home, we made pudding, and Marshall played with the whisk.

We did leftover Greek couscous salad (greens, couscous, feta, cucumber, tomato, red onion, garbanzo beans, red wine vinegar, olive oil, salt, pepper, oregano, basil, and lemon juice), and then once Marshall went to bed we prepped some food for the week: grilled peppers and onions for lunches (to wrap up in pita with hummus) and this recipe for overnight slow cooker oats to enjoy for breakfasts.

Meal plan for the week:
 - Ina's risotto with grilled chicken and green beans
- soup of some sort
- lots of leftovers :-)

Workouts should be better this week because we're allegedly heading toward some cooler weather. Maybe a jog or two to celebrate? Hopefully more success with the 30 Day Yoga Challenge?

Happy start of the week to you! I hope it's a great one!

JanJan's Visit

And we're back! My mom has been in town to visit the last two days, and even when I had time to write I certainly didn't feel like sitting on the couch with a hot computer on my lap.

My mom arrived Tuesday right after Marshall went down for his nap, so we hung around and had lunch and waited for him to wake up. Then it was play time! We didn't do much Tuesday afternoon, aside from try to stay cool in the house (will this heat wave EVER end?), and that evening we decided to order takeout from Fresh Corn Grill. We watched America's Got Talent (I've actually never seen that show, but they were in the semifinals and it was pretty entertaining!) and got to bed around 10.

Yesterday morning Marshall slept in until almost 7:30 (12 and a half hours of sleep!--but don't worry, he made up for it last night), so we got a bit of a late start on the day. We downed some smoothies and headed out for a ridiculously hot three mile walk. We ended at a bakery to grab pastries!

Then we raced home to get to My Gym. Marshall got to play with a vacuum, which was quite a thrill because he loves watching the real vacuum at home. I have a feeling he'll feel less enthusiastic about it in a few years when I actually ask him to vacuum the house.

We spent the rest of the afternoon running a few errands before Jenn joined us for dinner and got to witness the impressive battle Marshall put up before bed. My theory is that he was way overtired, so after nearly an hour he finally fell asleep on my chest in the glider. To be honest, much as I love all the nights when he falls asleep easily on his own, I savored those moments holding my sleeping toddler again. I haven't gotten to hold him asleep in months, and while I know that's a good thing, I also miss it! I managed to get him settled into his crib by 8 pm and gladly accepted a second glass of wine. The night was a hot, miserable one, so we all went to bed early and woke up way too early when Marshall decided 5 am was appropriate for play time. (I've said it before, and I'll say it again--late to bed means ridiculously early wake ups!)

Luckily we had a nice, easy morning planned, with an easy breakfast

and time at the park!

(pretty view)

And then it was time to say goodbye. My mom headed home around 10 and left me with a devastated little boy who cried for at least five minutes asking for JanJan (he can say her name!). Luckily, we'll travel up north in two weeks to visit her and my dad, so the countdown begins!

Some other fun facts:

- Last night we made this pulled pork carnitas recipe, and it was phenomenal. I highly recommend it. We did a taco/salad bar with a few options for toppings. Simple and versatile!

- Jenn is about to start maternity leave AND Amanda is living in LA again. <--I love that sentence more than you can imagine!

- My friend from college wrote an awesome article for The Huffington Post! Having such successful friends makes me feel super cool.

- Terry doesn't work tomorrow, so we're ready to start a three day weekend! We have minimal plans, including a memorial service, but family time is always wonderful, so I'm looking forward to it. We're also aiming to keep the oven OFF the entire weekend if it doesn't cool down, so tonight we're doing BLTs and salads. Workouts might be minimal, too, because I feel like I have been drinking my body weight in water just to keep up with this heat. Maybe just a walk or two around the neighborhood.

Any big plans this weekend?

Do you prefer intense heat or intense cold? I always want the opposite of what I'm experiencing, so I'm inclined to say cold right now. It's easier to warm up than cool down, right? So I'll go with that. Although I've never lived in a place where snow is an annual occurrence, so come back if I ever move to Norway.

Happy Friday (tomorrow) to you!

Labor Day at the Merry-Go-Round

Hello! Hope your weekend was long and wonderful and that your week ahead starts spectacularly. We had a mellow weekend over here for the most part with a few adventures thrown in for good measure. On Saturday we mostly hung around the house and in the afternoon watched the first UCLA game of the season--GO BRUINS! We have hope for a great year.

On Sunday two of our wonderful friends came over for brunch! Fay and David live in Oakland (remember their wedding at UCLA last year?), and we were so glad to have them over to see our new place and catch up. We talked a lot about families, kids, and travel, and then we sent them on their way back up the coast. Love those two!

After Marshall's nap, I insisted that we get out to do something, so we braved the heat and enjoyed a looooong walk to campus and through Westwood.

We stopped for Diddy Riese on the way back (we shared an ice cream + cookie sandwich) and declared ourselves completely exhausted for the evening.

And then this morning we took it easy--eggs, bacon, and potatoes for breakfast and a walk to the park--before making smoothies for an early lunch.

Frozen spinach, frozen strawberries, banana, peanut butter, and milk

Once Marshall went down for his nap, Terry and I checked out Yoga with Adriene--I had heard of it but never tried her videos. She did a 30 day challenge a while back, and we're going to try it to see if we like it. Day one was great! Perfect for our sore legs from all that walking yesterday.

In the afternoon, we headed out for one little Labor Day celebration: the Griffith Park Merry-Go-Round!

I had never been (or even seen it!), but it was SO fun and easy. Parking was free and super close to the carousel, and there was plenty of shade to keep things cool even on a hot day like today. We watched the merry-go-round once, then rode it once ($2 each), then watched one more time and headed out. Super quick but really fun and perfect for a toddler. On a cooler day we would have brought a picnic or enjoyed a hike, too! I highly recommend it if you're in the area.

Tonight we're closing down the weekend and gearing up for a visit from my mom for the next couple of days! (My dad is staying home with the puppy.) For some reason I have the oven on to bake cookies, so we're chugging ice water (well, and milk with the cookies) to try to stay cool.

Photos and Phrases

Happy Friday to you! Any plans for Labor Day weekend? We are staying home, which is pretty rare. Usually we visit my family and enjoy some waterskiing, but we decided it would be too much this year with the new puppy, crazy traffic, and the fact that Terry has to work tomorrow (which is actually pretty unusual! He has every other Friday off, and normally it works out that holiday weekends are off Fridays). So anyway, we're looking for some fun around here, and we're having brunch with our friends on Sunday. I'm sure we'll eat out once as a special treat, and I think some workouts will wind up on the agenda, as they usually do. Plus, the Bruins play on Saturday!

A phrase per photo. Simple post for Friday.

Double-fisting at breakfast:

The fire hat has become a semi-regular accessory.

Marshall's horoscope--Terry and I laughed out loud.

Grocery shopping at Whole Foods, which is rare now--I went a little overboard.

Not sure what this face was about, but today a trucker honked and waved at Marshall and pretty much made his day.

Our neighbor made us cupcakes! We used to have neighbors who smoked pot at our old place, and it was horrible. So today I e-mailed Terry and used the hashtag: #neighborswhobakearewaybetterthanneighborswhogetbaked. I was pretty proud.

I asked Marshall to help me shake up the potatoes with olive oil, and he took the bag and put it in a random drawer and then walked away. What the heck?

Dinner: Fish, squash, burrata, and potato.

Of possible interest:

My friend Heidi sent me this article on why C-Sections and Vaginal Births Are Exactly the Same, and I'm so grateful (thanks Heidi!). While of course they're not totally the same, and while I definitely think it's okay to feel any range of emotions about your particular birth, I really liked the article and thought the perspective was refreshing and sweet.

I found this article from a former GMO scientist fascinating, and it provides more in-depth information about GMOs. It's certainly food for thought at the very least.

And finally, I completely understand if this one isn't for everyone, but I'm really having a tough time processing the photo that went viral from the Syrian refugee tragedy. I won't pretend I understand much about what's going on in Syria and Europe, but I will say that the photo at least inspired me to learn more. Either way, this beautiful and tragic compilation of cartoon responses to the photograph broke my heart, mostly because of course I can't help thinking about my own little boy. Here's to more peace and more compassion in the world, if nothing else.

Fun, Clumsy Day and Kitchen Staples

Hello and happy Wednesday! Posts have become a bit sporadic around here, and I'm not really sure why. I guess we're soaking up our summer days as the sun sets a little earlier and we can sort of see fall approaching. It actually cooled down quite a bit yesterday, and today has felt downright pleasant. But let's not get ahead of ourselves; I'm sure we have more than enough hot days coming our way.

Anyway, the week has really chugged along, and I love weeks like that! Nothing big to report, just more plans than usual, which feels nice after so many long, hot, and sometimes boring summer days. Today we headed to Manhattan Beach to meet up with our My Gym friends and then went to My Gym itself. I'm beginning to LOVE Wednesday mornings! We walked along the pier and then grabbed a bagel before heading to class, the boys got to run and splash in puddles (Marshall actually decided to sit IN a puddle, of course), and my friend and I got to chat.

Future best friends?

Stacking fun!

Annnnnd someone's tired.

By the time we finished My Gym and made it home, I was exhausted, so I pepped myself up with some iced tea before continuing on with the day.

Although my day has been riddled with silly clumsy mistakes. I opened my water bottle in the car and spilled everywhere (probably 8-10 ounces). And then later...

And at dinner...

Amazing, as always.

Once Terry came home, he took Marshall to the library and captured the sweetest moment:

Marshall chose a book, sat down in a chair at a table, "read" the book, and put the book back on the shelf, all by himself! Who is this tiny human?

Our meal plan this week has been a lovely one, especially the fried rice and pulled pork. Tonight we used up the last of the pulled pork for some simple sandwiches (with caramelized onions and pepper jack cheese), along with a mix-n-match of greens to clear out the fridge of all these random bags of lettuce.

Fried rice earlier this week

Speaking of which, I noticed today that we rarely have extra food (without plans to use it soon) around (to my dismay, when Marshall was sound asleep and I had virtually no lunch options--I wound up eating yogurt, peanut butter, and banana). I read blogs all the time where the writer might mention something like, "We didn't have any dinner plans, so I scrounged around and made a big salad with tons of vegetables and leftover cooked chicken." How do you just happen to have a bunch of random vegetables--not to mention chicken--hanging out in the fridge with no plan for them? Or, "I got hungry in the afternoon, so I pulled out some forgotten snacks from the pantry." Forgotten snacks? Is this a thing? Do people actually buy food and then forget that they bought it? Because I'm over here trying to resist eating all the food on the first day I bought it.

Seriously, though, I do actually believe it saves us a lot of money (and headache) to meal plan and then only shop for what we need for the next few days or week or so. Living in small apartments for so long has not really allowed me to buy a ton of extras, because I have no space to store it! But it also helps ensure that we're only buying (for the most part) what we know we'll eat, and then we don't have to throw it away. It's great a lot of the time, but then those days come along where I wish I had a box of crackers to accompany some cheese for an afternoon snack.

So anyway our usual routine is to keep our "staples" stocked; we always have:
- milk
- yogurt
- peanut butter (crunchy for me, creamy for Marshall, Terry likes both) or, if I'm feeling crazy, almond butter
- maple syrup (we like the Kirkland Organic Maple Syrup)
- eggs
- nuts, although we haven't really been eating a ton of nuts lately--I got SO sick of them when I was pregnant!
- raisins
- oats
- some sort of bread (we like making our own now!) or tortillas or pita bread
- cheese--usually pepper jack and something else, like sharp cheddar
- fruit
- vegetables, but these vary from week to week based on meal plans
- in the freezer: frozen berries, frozen chopped spinach, and frozen peas, plus chicken stock
- around the kitchen: whole wheat flour, vanilla, baking powder and soda, spices and dried herbs, olive oil, balsamic vinegar, red wine vinegar, and a few condiments, like mustard
- some sort of dessert, which varies every few days

And then weekly or whenever I need to I grab what's needed for that week's meal plan, plus whatever staples need replenishing. It's sort of bare bones, but right now it works for us and prevents us from having too much food going to waste. I'd say our biggest waste is when we have really small portions of leftovers (we usually package them up but then ignore them because they aren't really a full meal), or when we have, say, half a lemon leftover from some recipe. Most of the time I have good intentions--"Oh, I'll just use that tomorrow to make lemon water or something!"--but it rarely gets used. I do much better when I have set plans for how I'll use ALL the food, so if a recipe only calls for half an onion I like to make sure I'll use the other half in the following day's recipe.

How do you avoid food waste? Any suggestions?

Do you prefer to keep your kitchen fully stocked with lots of options, or more bare bones and shop as needed?
