Sabrosa Burgers

In Spanish, sabrosa means tasty, savory, rich, tasteful. I wanted to find a name to describe these burgers, and sabrosa seems perfect, if I do say so myself.

One of the best things about these burgers? It was our first time using our little grill! Terry's grandpa gave us a small grill in July, and we finally used it today! Look at my proud husband.

What a stud!

Sabrosa Burgers
Serves 4

  • 1 pound ground beef or turkey (we used organic, grass fed beef)
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped red onion
  • 1 poblano pepper, finely chopped (I put half in the beef and half in the guac)
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons Terry's awesome seasoning (or taco seasoning of your choice)
Mix up the beef, onion, pepper, and seasoning and form into burgers. Grill 3 minutes on each side on a grill or in a grill pan (for turkey, cook longer).

The onion and peppers in the beef made for fantastic flavor!
Suggested toppings:

  • Whole wheat buns
  • Guacamole
  • Lettuce
  • Tomato
  • Manchego, pepper jack, jack, or cheddar cheese
  • Sour cream
Honestly, Terry and I were thrilled these turned out as delicious as they did! We loved them. And we're  already super excited to grill more!

In other news, thank you so much for the feedback on last night's post. My dad, a phenomenal leader and team player, had this tidbit to add to the conversation:
When people make comments directed at me, I do take the time to listen and self-evaluate. No one is perfect, so listening for "positive criticism", can be healthy for self-improvement. For other negative comments, sometimes its important to have a follow-up discussion so the other person has an opportunity to change their impression or perspective.

Team building is something I really enjoyed as a leader. For most of my life, I have fallen into, volunteered for, or successfully tested for leadership positions. One of the great roles I found in team building was finding the strengths and weaknesses of each member, including the "leader", then building upon those. Every member gets to contribute to the team through projects or events. Sometimes a leader has to help a team member get out of their comfort zone, by tactfully placing that person in a carefully orchestrated lead role. More often than not, each member better understands what "team" means and how everyone has a value to that team.
Well said, Pops.

Also, in honor of the day and in the spirit of recognizing heroes in our country, I wanted to share an article about a young CHP officer who was recently killed and then saved four lives. Have you considered becoming a donor? To read the article about CHP Officer Kenyon Youngstrom, click here. For more information about donating organs, visit Donate Life or California Transplant Donor Network. My family has been touched by organ donation, and on today in particular I'd like to share what a wonderful gift it is.

  1. why is it that dads are just so smart? i think one thing i miss most about living in chicago (i grew up there and went to grad school there) is being close to my parents. i'm currently trying to decide where i want to live after grad school 2.0 and i definitely think where my parents are is going to play a huge factor in it. parents = the best.

i'm adding those burgers to my pinterest board right now...they look so simple and tasty!

  3. I read the article about the young CHP officer....my dad's best friend unexpectedly died a couple weeks ago, and he was telling me that at the funeral, they actually named the individuals who were receiving his organs. His death was tragic at a younger age, but I think it is really cool how he is at least saving something like 20+ lives with all of his organs. Something we should all think about!
